The ore is removed from the ground in either open pit or underground mines. Underground sinking a vertical shaft into the earth to reach the copper ore and driving horizontal tunnels into the ore. Openpit 90% of ore is mined using the open pit method. Ores near the surface can be quarried after removal of the surface layers.

The ore is enriched using a process called froth flotation. Unwanted material (called gangue) sinks to the bottom and is removed.

This is where the chemical reactions start. The powdered, enriched ore is heated in air between 500°C and 700°C to remove some sulphur and dry the ore, which is still a solid called calcine.

A flux is a substance which is added to the ore to make it melt more easily. The solid calcine is heated to 1200°C and melts. Some impurities are removed forming a matte (a mixture of liquid copper and iron sulphide).

Air is blown into the liquid matte forming blister copper, so called because the gas bubbles trapped in the solid form blisters on the surface.

The copper is purified to 99.99% by electrolysis. The production route described above shows the progression from a rock containing about 0.2% copper to a copper cathode of 99.99% purity.

Leaching offers an alternative to copper mining. First, the ore is treated with dilute sulphuric acid. This trickles slowly down through the ore, over a period of months, dissolving copper to form a weak solution of copper sulphate. The copper is then recovered by electrolysis. This process is known as SXEW (solvent extraction/electrowinning). Advantages of these processes are: 1. Much less energy is used than in traditional mining 2. No waste gases are given off 3. Low capital investment 4. Ability to be operated economically on a small scale. It can be used on ore with as little as 0.1% copper for this reason leaching extraction is growing in importance. It is estimated that SXEW (virtually nonexistent before 1960) will represent 21% of total copper refined production in 2019.

Another important source of copper is recycled scrap, described as secondary copper production. Around half of Europes copper demand is currently met with recycled material, making an important contribution to the circular economy. To read more about copper recycling, click here.

ChatMined copper goes through a variety of processing techniques before it is ready to be made into any copper products. Once mined, higher quality sulphide ores are processed into a more concentrated form, referred to as copper concentrates. This ore type is then refined via pyrometallurgy.
ChatCopper concentrates produced by mines are sold to smelters and refiners who treat the ore and refine the copper and charge for this service via treatment charges (TCs) and refining charges (RCs). The global copper concentrate market [35] was valued at US$ 81 Billion in 2019 and is projected to reach US$ 93 Billion by 2027 expanding at a CAGR of

ChatThe remaining copper or the initial copper for secondary metal processing, where copper bullion levels are much lower, can be removed by selective sulfidization (i.e. fine decoppering). This is done by stirring sulfur or pyrite into the lead bath at around 330 °C.
Chat26, 2019 · Copper processing is a complex process that involves many steps as the manufacturer processes the ore from its raw, mined state into a purified form for use in many industries. Copper is typically extracted from oxide and sulfide ores that contain between 0.5 and 2.0% copper.
ChatFor copper sulfide ore, smelting is a stage in the process of pyrometallurgy, in which a series of steps use heat and a chemical reducing agent to decompose the partially processed ore, drive off other elements as gases or slag (waste), and leave just the concentrated copper base behind. The final product is a copper anode slab which is then

ChatThe Basics of Copper Mining and Processing. Mined from open pits, copper ore must be crushed as part of the process that occurs between extraction and production. Using todays compact mining equipment, copper ore is extracted from the mine. After the ore is crushed, its roasted, which helps to convert sulfides to oxides.

Chat11 After refining, the copper cathodes are melted and cast into ingots, cakes, billets, or rods depending on the final application. Ingots are rectangular or trapezoidal bricks, which are remelted along with other metals to make brass and bronze products. Cakes are rectangular slabs about 8 in (20 cm) thick and up to 28 ft (8.5 m) long.
ChatPurification of copper. When copper is made from sulphide ores by the first method above, it is impure. The blister copper is first treated to remove any remaining sulphur (trapped as bubbles of sulphur dioxide in the copper hence "blister copper") and then cast into anodes for refining using electrolysis. ChatCopper slag is a byproduct of copper extraction by smelting.During smelting, impurities become slag which floats on the molten metal. Slag that is quenched in water produces angular granules which are disposed of as waste or utilized as discussed below.
ChatProcesses: copper mining and production. Copper is found in natural ore deposits around the world. This page explains copper mining: the production route taken from orecontaining rock to a final product that is the highestpurity commercial metal in existence and used in a wide variety of applications essential to modern living.

ChatModern copper smelters use processed copper ore fed into a flash furnace, typically fired by oxygen which produces blister copper, being further processed in a converter furnace. Molten copper is poured from here into rectangular moulds, the resulting ingots subjected to electrolysis producing a metal of 99.9% purity. Copper can be recycled indefinitely without the base metal being compromised
